While attending a reunion of the Marine Corps 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Mark Wellman discovers that the man who saved his life while on a routine mission in Afghanistan in 2001, Staff Sergeant Max Sherman, was now serving a life sentence for murder.
Wellman visits Sherman in Fort Leavenworth to get his take on the circumstances that led to his conviction by court-martial. Through a series of events, Wellman comes to the realization that there is someone, 18 years later, attempting to impede his every move in discovering the truth.
Undeterred, Detective Wellman works the facts of the case until he hits a brick wall by none other than the Federal Government.
