According to the legend, the Mother of God took the Sacred Mountain under Her special protection. In 667 the pious monk, the Reverend Peter Athosky saw the Virgin who uttered in the dream: "The Athos mountain is my place from the My Son and God-given Me that the monks who are moving away from the world and the name My calling with belief and love with all the heart carried out the life without grief there and would receive life for the charitable affairs eternal". It is not accidental that on Athos many of miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary began to shine.
