Scotland's Island Railways

The islands around Scotland's coastline never received mainline passenger or freight services despite plans in the late 19th century and early 20th century to provide Skye and the Outer Hebrides with their own railways. However, over the years, various narrow gauge railway lines were laid on the islands. While the vast majority were industrial - serving quarries, mines and busy harbours - others were built for military use, some served remote lighthouses and a few carried passengers.
