Alex Deville is stuck in a rut. She's a paranormal journalist from New York City who doesn't believe in the paranormal. It's not the rumor that the nuns of the Golden Veil are performing exorcisms without the Vatican's approval that intrigues her; it's the man at the center of the ritual: Oskar Klepp, a serial killer Alex has reported on.
