The people of Easter Island, Rapanui, lived in relative peace. People fished and farmed on the isolated island for hundreds of years. Their beliefs created stone carvers to make statues of their ancestors to protect the families and villages of the island. Then on April 5, 1722, first contact with an outside people was made. Within a few ears, the Rapanui were thrown into chaos, distruction and survival.
