Asher seems like he's from another world. A knight in the savage wastelands with newly manufactured equipment and a hulking armored vehicle. When he tells her he's from a city state called Cosanti where people live in safety, have plenty to eat, and where factories churn out wonders, Adina isn't sure how to believe him. After all, the city states were just stories, fairytales of abundance. No one actually believed them. But Asher is real -- so maybe the city states are real too.

Asher offers her a choice. He's on a quest to discover things that can bring life back to the poisoned world. She can go with him, or go her own way. But going with him means venturing deep into the unforgiving wastes where the ruins of the old world are said to lay. But no one goes there. It's suicide. The stories say the land is toxic and anything living there is as twisted and horrific as the searing legacy that birthed them.

For Adina, choosing between her unbridled feelings for the extraordinary stranger who saved her life or dying alone in the wastelands is simple. Whatever horrors or challenges may lie ahead, they will face them together.
