Eighteen-year-old Amber Silverby is a recent academy graduate and a witch who conceals her magic shapeshifting powers to avoid being imprisoned or turned into a living statue by her unhinged uncle, the king. Royal law commands that all witches must wear cursed cuffs that restrain their magic. The curse is ancient and can only be defeated by an ancient weapon lost to time, a witchblade. Amber is hellbent on finding the weapon. And if she can't find it, she will remake it with the help of her mom's underground rebel society, the Medusa Coven.

When Amber mistakenly reveals her secret to Gavin, her academy rival and the most sadistic witch hunter in the city, she endangers her mission and creates a rivalry that threatens her freedom. When Gavin convinces the king to arrange a marriage between them, Amber takes another vow, turning her betrothed into her mortal enemy.
