Back Route: A Memoir of Delay, Discipline and Becoming

What if your greatest failure was only the beginning?

In 2003, George Asiamah left secondary school with a result slip that read FEFFEFE: seven subjects - four Fs and three Es.

For a boy once known as Wise, the child prodigy who skipped three classes in a single day, it felt like the end of the road.

Instead, it was the beginning of another one.

Raised by a single mother in the village of Chichibon, Ghana, George grew up walking the back route: a narrow bush path used when the main road failed. Long before he realised it, that path would become a metaphor for his life.

From a childhood marked by poverty, truancy, and disappointment, he becomes a shoeshine boy on the streets of Accra, a university student against the odds, a scholar, and eventually a fellow at Oxford.

But The Back Route is not a tale of effortless triumph.

It is a story about second chances, stubborn hope, and the quiet discipline required to rebuild a life after it has fallen apart. It is about mothers who refuse to give up on their children, teachers who intervene at critical moments, and the ordinary people whose small acts of kindness alter someone's future forever.

Written with warmth, honesty, and remarkable insight, this memoir challenges the myth that success follows a straight line. Instead, it reveals a deeper truth:

Most lives move forward by detour.

For readers of Born a Crime, Educated, and inspiring stories of resilience, social mobility, and self-discovery, The Back Route is a compelling reminder that when the main road closes, another path may still lead you home.
