The island of Crete, the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, stands at a crucial juncture in its energy evolution. Traditionally reliant on imported fossil fuels and isolated from the mainland power grid, Crete exemplifies the challenges-and the unique opportunities-faced by insular energy systems in the Mediterranean and beyond. With its abundant natural resources, particularly solar and wind energy, and growing awareness of environmental imperatives, Crete is poised to become a model for sustainable, decentralized energy development. This book, The Energy System in the Island of Crete, Greece: Towards a Sustainable Energy Future, seeks to explore and document the transformation of Crete's energy landscape. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the island's energy system, assesses the integration of renewable energy sources, and investigates the socio-economic, technological, and policy frameworks guiding this transition. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the book aims to inform researchers, policymakers, engineers, and other stakeholders about the practical pathways and systemic changes required to achieve energy sustainability on the island. In writing this book, I have attempted to strike a balance between technical detail and accessible narrative. I delve into the physical and infrastructural characteristics of Crete's energy system-its generation capacities, grid limitations, storage needs, and interconnection prospects-while also examining the policy instruments, regulatory frameworks, and local initiatives shaping its evolution.
